Beer Geek Tuesday

Want to see what beer geeks look like? Remember when I was trying to coax someone in LA to get me a bottle? Check out this great video from the Black Tuesday release party. This kind of thing happens all over the country and I think it's a great way for breweries to make money and build hype. Black Tuesday now stands at #3 on beeradvocate.

Hey Boulevard, you watching that? You should be doing this for your soon to be coming wheat wine, rye, and tank 7 releases. You've got the space, make it happen!

So what did we learn? Most beer geeks apparently like their pants to be denim, their faces to have some sort of hair (if their a male), and their age to be in the 20's or 30's. Oh, and also apparently we like to stand outside in lines just to taste a new beer.

Good lord JB, no! The last thing I want to do is stand in line for several hours to *not* get a beer (which happened to many people, if their tweets are to be believed).

May Boulevard not fall into the hype trap and actually create enough beer for those who want it to actually get it. I'd much rather just pop by Royal on my way home than stand in line for hours. So call me fussy.

I see both of your points, but I don't think it has to be limited. I think you can still have a release party for a beer to get it early. However, if you put yourself in a marketing position of a brewery and if you have a big enough beer geek following crowd then a limited release sure is the way to get you towards the top of a list. Not that making the top of the list is the goal, but good revenue and advertising. 3 Floyds, Surly, Portsmouth, Deschutes, The Bruery, they all do it and I think it's a very strategic move.

Oh and Jared, we also learned that some of them are tall and some are short.

But one thing we did learn was that they are all very determined. I just like the guy in the back of the line with crutches, puts the determination in perspective.

Received an e-mail from The Bruery giving details about this a couple of days in advance--but didn't make it to my LA cousin in time. And, I would have regretted having her wait in line! Wonder if the beer is as great as beeradvocate indicates? Hope you may get ahold of one!

BTW KC Abyss was released recently. Wanna do a beer trade if I can get my hands on some??

I didn't realize that this was a "limited" release, I thought it was just a release party, which is what I was suggesting Blvd should do. I guess my thinking is that unless you pay attention to the half dozen or so beer blogs, you may not necessarily know when the next round of Smokestacks or seasonals are coming out. Blvd has that great space in their new addition, and it would be super cool if they would do a release event on it, allow you to buy up a few of the releases, and maybe hand out some swag in the process. In the age of the interwebs, facebooks, tweets and googles, it's surprising that you have to hunt for when they are going to be releasing their next batches. I think there's a sizeable and growing beer geek community here in the area, and you could spark up a good amount of interest by having an event such as this.

But totally agreed, if it were a limited release, and I stood in line for hours and didn't get anything, I'd be pretty pissed. You'd only be generating bad press for yourself in that case.

JB, I think blvd is already in talks about doing this so you're not far off.

Good to hear. I'd meant to ask them about that at the last Smokestack Lunch, but I think I had too many Tank 7's and forgot...:)

I don't think that Boulevard is allowed to sell beer directly to consumers at the brewery. They would have to have a release party at a liquor store or restaurant.
