Speaking of movies what about "Rator of the Lost Bock". Bam, nailed it! A couple weeks ago I was trying to think of names for a hypothetical future dopplebock that I may someday brew. I settled on Inebriator, which is used on Beeradvocate for a couple stouts, but surprisinly not for a dopplebock. I didn't think about the pun route.

To be a little edumucational, the 'ator' at the end of most dopplebocks goes, I believe, back to monks in the 1650s or so. They couldn't eat much solid food so they brewed a strong and very malty "liquid bread" type of beer to sustain them through the lenten season. They called it Salvator. Paulaner eventually bought the patent to the name and other companies add the "ator" as an homage to the original.

I've also heard the story that the monks wondered if their beer might be too awesome, and therefore not appropriate for the somber lent. They sent some to the pope, but of course the beer was badly damaged by the sun and rough trip and by the time it made it from Germany to Rome it had turned nasty. The pope tried it and deemed drinking it fitting for the spirit of sacrifice and hardship that goes with lent.Timnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-630680102724758379.post-58723503682818987252009-07-31T14:56:22.546-05:002009-07-31T14:56:22.546-05:00hell, let's do a dopple tasting and get all of...hell, let's do a dopple tasting and get all of the -ator beers together
S'muttonator
Troegenator
Oleator
OptimatorTim (Drunk-Monkey) Markshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11553554434447988569noreply@blogger.com
